White Tail Spider Bite – Pictures, Symptoms, Causes, Treatment

The white tailed spider is a common spider in most homes in parts of the world, including Australia and New Zealand. The bite of this spider can cause skin lesions, and is very painful. Today, scientists say that this spider does not really cause necrotizing arachnidism, a condition that causes the skin to tear and shed off.  In Australia, especially during the warmer months, these spiders can be found in beddings, or clothes than have been left on the floor. It is a gray spider but is colored white in the tail area. It is common for the skin to blister and form weal around the area of the bite. Sometimes there will even be some ulceration.

Usually a white tailed spider bite will only cause a small reaction. This will be characterized by some discoloration of the skin, and itching, which can stay for days. When you get bitten by this spider, you should use a cold compress to reduce the pain, inflammation and swelling. You should not use antibiotics and you should see a doctor when you get bitten. You should also try to eliminate this spider from your home, and you can call in the local pest control service.

The white tailed spider is a small spider that can grow up to 2 cm in length. It has a dirty gray to brown color, and it has glossy legs. There is a light colored spot at the tail section hence the name. It may also have two spots near the front of the body. The white tailed spider loves to hide in nooks and crannies, on towels left on the floor, in bedding, beneath leaves or mulch and in the cracks of tree bark.

The white tailed spider normally bites on the arms and legs, although they can bite anywhere on the body. The symptoms that most people exhibit when bitten by this spider include localized irritation and pain, a small lump, burning sensation, discoloration of the skin, ulceration of the bite, or nausea and vomiting.

Should you get bitten by a white tailed spider, you should get the spider for purposes of identification. You should immediately use an icepack for the pain and swelling. It will also help bring down the burning sensation. If the skin begins to blister and ulcerate you should see a dermatologist.

Necrotizing arachnidism

This is the ulceration and inflammation of the skin which is caused by some spider bites, including the white tailed spider. This can sometimes become so severe that the patient looses such large amounts of skin leading to a skin grafting procedure. Although this spider is linked, together with the black house spider, to the development of this disease, a study found that out of 130 confirmed white tail spider bites, none had reported the development of this condition. The white tail spider bites occur in the warmer months and usually at night. The bites are usually very painful, and there is the formation of a lesion, but in all cases the lesions did not become necrotic

There are conflicts amongst scientists as to why some people develop this condition while others do not. Although only a tiny minority develops this condition after a spider bite, there is still cause for concern. Here are some of the reasons put forth by researchers.

Mistaken identification of the spider as a white tail spider. Researchers say that the victims get bitten by another spider and blame it on the white tail spider.

Misdiagnosis of a lesion appearing on the skin as coming from the spider, only for the condition to develop into another disease not related to spiders at all. There are victims who may have a pre-existing medical condition, which leads to the ulceration after the spider bite.

Treatment for necrotizing arachnidism

This condition does not have a direct cure. The condition is tamed by the use of antibiotics and corticosteroids.

The victims can also be given hyperbaric oxygen treatments, which are simply large doses of pressurized oxygen.

Finally, the dead skin can be removed surgically and a skin graft performed to save the tissue.

In order to avoid being bitten by the white tail spider, you have to carry out proper pest control in your home. White tail spiders feed on other spiders , so getting their numbers down will discourage the white tail from staying in your home. The webs of other spiders are the ones that attract the white tail spider so you should clean the house of all spider webs.

You should also get into the habit of shaking out your beddings before you get in, and you should keep clothes tucked away in wardrobes. Shake out any clothing before you put it on.

Finally you can call on the services of a professional pest control service. They will be able to bring down the number of pests in your home, including the white tailed spider.
