Perispinal Etanercept

Perispinal etanercept is an anti-inflammatory drug, which was initially designed to help in treating rheumatoid arthritis. Perispinal etanercept may be used alone or with immunosuppressant to help in treating arthritis conditions associated with autoimmune and in treatment of skin condition like psoriasis. Etanercept controls the response of the body immunity system by blocking the action TNF substance, which attacks and destroys body cells in the event of an overactive immune system.

If you suffer from arthritis, you might have been told by your doctor you have over-active TNF and prescribed a medication like TNF blocker to use. TNF simply stands for tumor necrosis factor, a protein that the body immune system produces. The use of the word “tumor” should not make you panic considering that it is associated with cancer. In TNF, the word tumor is used to refer to abnormal cells that tend to grow rapidly.

Because cancer cells are within this category, there are also many other cells, which can grow rapidly including virus cells, fungus, and bacteria cells. The body recognizes these cells as foreign substances and assumes they are abnormal. The use of perispinal etanercept in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis is pegged on the mechanism of TNF inhibitors or blockers.

These inhibitors prevent the body from attacking its own tissue, as happens in autoimmune disorders like some arthritis conditions. Although perispinal etanercept has been used for many years in treatment of autoimmune related arthritis, its use has extended to other conditions. Dr. Edward Tobinick has used perispinal etanercept in treatment of many other conditions including dementia and treatment-resistant discogenic pain of the cervical or lumbar.

An observation study in the past has provided some clinical evidence, which shows that patients with chronic neurological dysfunction that results from traumatic brain injury or stroke could improve in their health when administered with perispinal etanercept. Edward Tobinick from Institute of Neurological Recovery in Los Angeles argues that brain injury that arises from stroke or traumatic brain injury may lead in long-term neuroinflammatory response within the injury penumbra.

In the response, there may be microglial activation as well as excessive levels of the tumor necrosis factors-TNF substance that is responsible for attacks of body cells. Edward Tobinick further argues that previous experimental data has shown the use of etanercept, which is a selective TNF inhibitor, can help improve microglial activation. It also modulates the adverse synaptic effect that is caused by presence of higher levels of the TNF protein substance.

Tobinick has further highlighted that, past clinical evidence suggests the use of etanercept as a perispinal administration helps in rapid relief of neurological dysfunction and pain arising from herniated nucleus pulposus. The administration of etanercept also helps in relieving spinal pain caused by bone metastases.

In treatment of dementia and related diseases including Alzheimer’s, the clinical evidence showed that use of this drug can result to rapid and sustained relief and improvement in cognitive function. In a study that was conducted in California and Florida at the Institute of Neurological Recovery, featuring stroke group, it indicated that the participants who took part in the study received significant improvements within the first three weeks of treatment.

The stroke group showed improvement in spasticity, motor impairment, cognition, sensory impairment, pain and asphania, behavioral function, psychological function, and others like urinary incontinence. In patients with trauma brain injury-TBI, they showed improvement in spasticity and motor impairment.
